Field Guide : Surf Scoter (Male)
Unlimited edition. 18 x 24 inch, museum-quality poster on matte paper.
🦨 “Skunk head” is the well worn nickname you’ll hear in outdoorsy circles, but I’ve always thought of the drake surf scoter as a regal clown, the jester who assumed the throne. His striking head and bill are unforgettable – that combination of black, white, orange, and yellow is 😍. But here’s the thing; this charismatic sea duck species is usually observed on the water, the vibrant chili red of his paddling legs unseen. As a result, that punch of red doesn’t generally spring to mind, but because the “Field Guide” color column is drawn from the full profile view of each featured species, it’s that leggy scarlet you see just below the surf scoter’s rich, warm black – an even greater percentage than his “skunkhead” white! Creating this poster has transformed my mental picture of surf scoters, yet another example of how this project is changing my perspective on species I’ve long observed. 🕵️
Note: These archival poster prints feature rich, appealing colors. I encourage customers to take care in handling them until they are framed/protected for display; the darker colors on the matte paper can be scratched. They ship rolled, so customers need to flatten them before framing (or have their framer do so).
Charitable Sales Model: Whenever one of these poster prints is purchased, a charitable contribution equal to 10% of the print’s cost (or $3.60) is made to a nonprofit working to tackle environmental or social challenges. Read more about my charitable sales model here.
